Bamboo Pavilion

A volunteer pavilion for farmers in rural Guangdong

Bamboo Pavilion

This project was a summer volunteer program for farmers in the rural areas of Guangdong, China. Rather than a fancy museum, the farmers there felt a tiny pavilion would be far more helpful — somewhere to rest on rainy days.

As an architect, I'm interested in the dynamics between government power and public welfare. In China, many public spaces have been transformed into giant, out-of-human-scale, costly monuments — displays of the government's political power and strength that ignore the need for more humanized, accessible, everyday civic space.
